Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport Code

Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) is located in Sarasota and Manatee counties, Florida, between the cities of Sarasota and Bradenton. It was originally built as a military training facility in 1941, and was known as the Sarasota Army Airfield. In 1945, the airport was decommissioned by the U.S. Army Air Corps and transferred to Sarasota County. After several years of being used for general aviation purposes, commercial air service began in 1952 with Eastern Airlines providing service to Tampa. Over the next few years, other airlines such as National Airlines and Delta Air Lines began offering flights from SRQ. In 1960, Delta began offering direct flights to Atlanta, Ga., making SRQ one of only four airports in Florida that offered direct flights to another state at that time.

In 1972, SRQ underwent a major expansion with two new runways added along with additional boarding areas and other improvements designed to make it more attractive for airlines to provide service from the airport. This effort was successful as more airlines began offering flights from SRQ including Continental Airlines (now United Airlines), USAir (now American Airlines) and Northwest Airlines (now Delta). The 1980s saw further improvements at SRQ including a new terminal building which opened in 1984 along with additional parking areas for both passengers and aircrafts. Additionally during this decade cargo operations were expanded at SRQ leading to an increase in total passengers served by the airport each year.
