Santa Maria Public Airport Code

Santa Maria Public Airport was originally established in 1942 as a military airfield. The airfield was used by the United States Army Air Forces Fourth Air Force to train pilots, navigators, and bombardiers during World War II. After the war, it was turned over to Santa Barbara County and became a civilian airport known as Santa Maria Airport. In 1961, the County of Santa Barbara began a major expansion project at the airport that included the construction of new runways and taxiways, additional hangars, fueling facilities, and other amenities. The project was completed in 1966 and resulted in a modern airport facility with two paved runways capable of handling large aircraft. Today, Santa Maria Public Airport serves as an important regional hub for both commercial and private aviation activities. It is home to several charter services as well as providing general aviation services such as flight instruction, aircraft rental, maintenance services, fuel sales, and more. The airport also hosts various special events throughout the year including air shows and fly-ins. Additionally, it serves as an important regional reliever for both commercial airlines and general aviation traffic from nearby airports such as Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
