San Diego International Airport Code

San Diego International Airport (SAN) opened in 1928 as the Lindbergh Field. It was originally a single runway, two-gate airport and was named after aviator Charles Lindbergh. In 1941, it was taken over by the United States Navy to be used as a training airfield and remained under military control until 1946. In 1947, San Diego County purchased the airfield from the Navy and began construction of a new terminal building and additional runways. The new facility opened in August 1948 as San Diego International Airport, offering regional flights within California and Nevada.

In 1959, San Diego International Airport underwent further expansion with the addition of an international terminal. This allowed for flights to Mexico City, making SAN one of the first airports in the U.S. to offer international service. By 1970, SAN had become one of the busiest airports in California with over 4 million passengers per year.

Since then, additional runways have been added and several renovations have taken place at SAN in order to keep up with growing passenger demand. In 1998, construction began on a major renovation project that included an expanded terminal layout with more gates and increased security measures due to heightened security concerns after 9/11. This renovation project was completed in 2005 and is still used today as one of the most efficient airport layouts for passenger flow within California’s airports system.
