Dallas-Love Field Airport Code

Dallas-Love Field Airport was built in 1917, and originally named Dallas Aviation Field. During World War I, the airfield was used as a flight training center for the U.S. Army Air Service. After the war, commercial flights began to use the airport and in 1927, it was renamed Love Field after Lt. Moss Lee Love, who died in an airplane crash in 1913 while serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps in San Diego.

During World War II, Love Field served as a military base and training facility for the United States Army Air Forces and its successor organization, the United States Air Force (USAF). The airport saw a tremendous amount of military traffic during this time period as well as an increase in civilian travel due to postwar economic prosperity. In 1948, Southwest Airlines began operations at Love Field which marked an important milestone for the airport’s growth and development into a regional hub for domestic flights around Texas and other parts of the Southwest United States.

In 1957, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) opened just 24 miles away from Love Field after decades of planning and construction delays due to political disagreements over its location. This caused a significant decrease in passenger traffic at Love field as many travelers chose to fly out of DFW instead due to its larger size and modern amenities that were not available at Love Field at that time such as larger gates and more direct routes to international destinations around the world. Despite this setback, Dallas-Love Field Airport continued to be used by local commuters who preferred its smaller size and more convenient location closer to downtown Dallas than DFW International Airport which is located outside of city limits further away from downtown areas.
